The Birth of "Fascia-Informed™ Wellness"
Now that we have covered all the important roles the fascial system plays in the body and how it can be influenced negatively let's focus on what we can do to influence its wellness.
This section synthesizes the latest fascia research with practical applications across various specialty areas. While we won't delve into exhaustive practice methodologies (as it would vastly expand the course's scope), I have developed specialized courses for deeper exploration of each topic. Some of these courses are currently available, and others are in development, and they will progressively enrich our course library.
I anticipate that many of the participants in this course bring considerable expertise in these areas. This course aims to augment your professional repertoire by offering a fascia-centric perspective, facilitating deeper connections with clients. Fascia gives us a more complete look at the human body. Through this fascial lens, clients often achieve a more profound and intuitive understanding of their bodies, surpassing what conventional perspectives can offer.
Wellness Concepts
This section is about how we can keep our fascia functioning well and pass this information on to our clients. As OTPs, we have a vast domain and the ability to help our clients in all the areas in this section.
You will notice that many of these areas are commonly accepted as supporting general health and wellness. As OTPs, we don't always have time to address general wellness with our clients. We only have time to address the problem and goal directly in front of us that is affecting our client's function. We must find a way to rehabilitate the client to reach the goals, help them find a way to compensate to achieve the goal or employ a combination of these strategies to reach the goal.
In traditional healthcare settings, we are often restricted to a number of visits, a dollar amount, or another arbitrary time frame within which healing must occur. I aim to provide you with ways to layer in additional concepts, tweak your therapeutic strategies, and offer effective fascia-focused homework resources for your clients.
Communicating with the Client
What I hope you have gleaned thus far is that unhealthy fascia is very likely part of the problem and must be considered as we develop intervention plans. When we know to include assessing and treating the fascial system in our practice, we have a more complete approach to solving problems and creating a plan to reach our clients' goals.
I aim to demonstrate how we can use tools many of us are already familiar with to improve the fascia's health, which will positively affect the other body systems we are attempting to impact with our current interventions. Additionally, I aim to help you explain this connection to your clients so they may better grasp the importance of their choices while in the process of healing and beyond.
The areas we will cover in this section:
- Breathing techniques
- Stress management strategies
- Hydration and nutrition optimization
- Sleep quality improvement
- Posture and body alignment enhancement
- Stability and mobility enhancement
- Movement and stretching exercises
When we have clear ways of explaining the connections between these areas and the issues our clients are experiencing, they are more likely to understand the connection between these areas and their health and then become more open to making changes that will support their healing. For example, when I explain the connection between posture and fascia and how this connection contributes to their experience of pain, I often hear the following: No one has ever explained it like that. It makes sense to me now.
The Concept of Fascia Wellness is Born
The legal name of my business is Mayer Wellness & Myofascial Release. I wanted to communicate to the public that I am a wellness practitioner. I proudly display my occupational therapy credentials as well! I added the "& Myofascial Release" to my business name because that is what people hear about on podcasts, in news articles, and magazines. People are Googling myofascial release to find ways to help them with all kinds of issues. I knew adding the phrase "myofascial release" would get me found by the people I wanted to serve.
My logo above highlights "fascia" tucked in between my name and wellness. I wanted people to see that I see my role as helping to keep their fascia well. When the fascia is well or functioning optimally, everything else has a far better chance to work as it should.
When I assess, intervene, and teach clients, I go well beyond myofascial release. My goal is to empower my clients with the knowledge and strategies to heal faster and become more resilient.
I also created the Fascia Wellness Guide, which is free. My goal with this was to get the public thinking about how they can access healing via the fascia in more ways than just having someone put their hands on them using myofascial techniques. I've added a copy below, but you will get 10 times the information in the remainder of this section.
