Deciding Where to Begin with Self-Treatment

Self-Treatment Decision

In the last section, you completed your evaluation and reflected on the severity of your symptoms. Did you decide your symptoms were mild, moderate, or severe? This information will help you decide where to start with your self-treatment.

Mild TMD

If you have only very occasional pain, clicking, or decreased motion in your jaw and your symptoms are not affecting your daily activities, you may want to skip the Reducing Your Pain with Myofascial Release Self-Treatment for now. We encourage you to come back and go through the entire Reducing Your Pain with Myofascial Release Self-Treatment and Regaining Strength and Function sections eventually.

For now, you may be better served by skipping ahead to the Preventing Flare-Ups section. Why? If your symptoms are only occasional, they may be due to problems with posture, stress, or other areas we cover in that section.

Recommended order for Mild TMD:

  • Preventing Flare-Ups
  • Reducing Your Pain with Myofascial Release Self-Treatment
  • Regaining Strength and Function

Moderate TMD

If you have any pain at all, please start with the Reducing Your Pain with Myofascial Release Self-Treatment section. If your daily activities are not being affected and you haven't changed your food choices, skip the Regaining Strength and Function section and jump to Preventing Flare-Ups.

Recommended order for Moderate TMD:

  • Reducing Your Pain with Myofascial Release Self-Treatment
  • Preventing Flare-Ups
  • Regaining Strength and Function

Severe TMD

For more severe TMD, we suggest going in the order presented.

  • Reducing Your Pain with Myofascial Release Self-Treatment
  • Regaining Strength and Function
  • Preventing Flare-Ups
